It's been a while... but new stuff is happening.

First of all, I'm doing a new video blog called "Platinum Select" for Funnel Pages.com. Last month, I went to the Slingluff Gallery, this month I'll be heading to Pterodactyl Project Space and FluxSpace.

Next of all, I have new work on view as part of Let's Play Nice, an exhibition curated by Diedra Krieger at SINErgy Space.

Additionally of all, I have a new jobski doing graphics for a manufacturing company. (Just in case you were wondering.)

I'll let ya'all know when the next Platinum Select is out, because I know you just can't wait.

September! At last!

We've got a new show at Great and Terrible that I'll be babysitting tomorrow night (you should stop by. It's beautiful.) But, before I go over there, I'll be stopping by a few other shows.

First stop, of course, is 11th and Wood Street for Vox Populi, Tiger Strikes Asteroid and, I'm sure, miscellaneous surprises.

Vox was closed for August (thank God.) and reopens with Jamie Dillon, David Kontra, Jonathan Prull (who I'm hoping to meet, as he shares my fixation with one Mr. Clint Eastwood), a curated show by Roxana Perez-Mendez, and Sarah J. Christman in the Video Lounge. (In the interest of full disclosure -- happy now, artblahg? -- I'll be starting an internship at Vox later today.)

Tiger Strikes Asteroid's website makes the claim that we'll be able to view Adam Blumberg's Punctum, which, according to the ICA blog is about midwestern men -- a tasty corollary to Prull's drawings of Eastwood?

Next, I'm going to Projects Gallery for their emerging artists show because my friends Michelle Clements and Kelly A. Kozma are showing in it. (While many of us that qualify as emerging artists are unhappy with what appears to be Projects' new policy that 'It's Who You Know', I'm happy for Kelly and Michelle, who genuinely make excellent work. Also, genuinely excited to see the show, even though there was no open call. Inflammatory post coming soon? We'll see. Oh, and Kelly's showing at Great and Terrible, too...)

Last stop is Little Berlin since they're our neighbors on Montgomery Ave. This month, they've curated some Tyler grad students from the crafts department. I'm, as of now, ambivalent, but may yet be pleasantly surprised.

Ai Weiwei

Daily Serving recently published a post reviewing Ai Weiwei's works with ancient urns. In its secret complexity and seeming simplicity, in the potency and cruciality of its gestures and its tragic irreverence, these works, as they say, speak to me. For me, there is a deep sadness in this work that is linked to social questions we will never be able to resolve, and, among other things, the work raises questions about living that emphasize the necessary futility of our constant inner struggles as manifested into physical objects.

There is so much to discuss when dealing with this work, and I won't attempt to cover it all here, but I will begin by arguing a little bit with the Daily Serving blogger. The article posits that "Urns of this vintage are usually cherished for their anthropological importance. By employing them as readymades, Ai strips them of their aura of preciousness only to reapply it according to a different system of valuation....Working in this manner, Ai transforms precious artifacts—treating them as base and valueless by painting, dropping, grinding, or slapping with a logo—into contemporary fine art." Certainly, Ai's actions treat these cherished object as base and valueless. They undergo cheap processes of being painted or destroyed unbefitting the value they have been assigned by our culture. But do these actions truly strip the objects of their aura or rather do they magnify that aura? In the end, the painted and crushed and broken urns do not function as objects independent of their original identity -- they function BECAUSE of their original identity. We gain an added layer of consideration, as viewers, when confronted with the altered urns, but that consideration relies on a primary consideration of the objects' intended purposes and calls on our deep social attachments to the myth of these objects. They become even more precious because our reaction to these works is initially to believe that they are being mistreated. Therefore, Ai cannot divorce the aura from the object - and from looking at the work, I'm not really sure that was even his intention.

"Hi there!

If you're an artist and would like to show at our book space for the month of August, we are putting out an open call to anyone who would like to do so. Please bring up to three pieces that you'd like to display and we'll make it work, we have lots of space in our warehouse. Share whatever it is that you do, even if you have just one piece! The more the merrier :)

We're putting together a bit of party for this coming First Friday, August 6th from 7PM until at least midnite. We'll have live jazz, a DJ, and the usual First Friday refreshments. Bring your artwork, bring some friends and lets have some fun with it!

We're located just a 1/2 block south of Frankford & Girard Avenues in Fishtown.

Beth Heinly reads Art & Fear: Observations On the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking, by David Bayles and Ted Orland. The 2001 book is a self-proclaimed "artist's survival guide, written by and for working artists. The authors explore the way art gets made, the reasons it doesn't get made, and the nature of the difficulties that cause so many artists to give up along the way." Be very afraid.

Puppetyrrany presents "Mouth Puppet Show" by Zac Palladino and Leslie Rogers, a perilous puppet show inside a human mouth, the wettest stage of all. Your reluctant participation is encouraged in "The Miracle of Birth," "Catfight," and "Italian Cooking 101." Also, "Mystic Powers" by John Sinclair will be presented. A scrolling 100-foot live-action-picture-book, "Mystic Powers" is the hero's journey as understood by 5-year-old Zac Palladino and retold using the crudest cantastoria. Be amazed."

A little while back, I posted an image of a Matthew Craven drawing that I had a crush on at the time.

Well, first of all, I'm terrible with names, so when I was at Grizzly Grizzly on the night of the Vox VI opening, I was attracted to the drawings there, but couldn't help but feeling "Hey, I've already seen this!!" As it turned out, I HAD. Here I was in front of the original collages from "History is Written by the Winners", stuff I liked online, and didn't even remember. HOW EMBARRASSING.

Who is Voldemort and what is he like?

What is the cultural value of entertainment? While much of current discourse dictates that art must be oppositional in order to be valid, how do we rectify humanity's apparent need for entertainment as proven by a culture glutted with wildly popular, non-oppositional broadcast programming, blockbuster cinema, and internet memes? This exhibition aims to explore the question of who we are supposed to be opposing and why, and maintains the view that while it is important to question the ideas we consume and their sources, non-oppositional entertainment culture need not be demonized by default.

While I was advised against using outlined text by a trusted friend who is an excellent designer, I ended up using it anyway. I made a few versions with and without the outline and my dad really liked the outline because it added to the cheesy-kitschy feel he and I wanted for the whole thing.

Believe it or not, we pulled it off. Mystery Flavor, the inaugural show for The Great and Terrible Collective has launched!

The opening reception went well. We got to hand out amazing prizes like play dough, bubbles, plastic cowboys and Giant Citrus Flying disks, talk with Beth Heinly and Kelani Nichole of our neighbor collective, Little Berlin, show off for a rep from The ArtBlog, and celebrate with delicious watermelon!

Drafted by Bailey Goldenbaum, Courtney Mendenhall, Dana M Osburn, Lisa Murphy and Rachael Ocelus on April 5^th, 2010.

We the people of The Great and Terrible Artists' Collective hold these truths to be self-evident:

Our public gallery shall promote young artists in the region by providing exhibition and event space, and it shall provide an informal, comfortable space for people to experience art that is accessible and enjoyable and thereby foster a sense of community.
Our artistic and curatorial decisions shall push the limits of the art and technology relationship without abandoning what traditional practices have to offer.
It's ok for people to lick plates at our openings. Just don't lick your fingers, Bailey doesn't like that.
Our group shall use humor and absurdity to instill a feeling of goodness while still making perceptive, insightful works that are conscious of the current world situation.
Our efforts aim to provide a meaningful contribution to the local arts community.
By remaining a not-for-profit organization, we can remain outside of the constraints of the art market, but by allowing artists to sell their work in our space, we will not deny artists the opportunity to support themselves and their practice.

Made up of five emerging artists, the Great and Terrible membership works in varied media and with even more varied ideas, but comes together under a sense of camaraderie and shared social problems. Thunderclese. Clap clap. Goodbye.

Art 21, Faulkner and Fat Fuzzy Kitties

The countdown has begun: One month to finish and install the work for the thesis show. While I feel that things are starting to come together regarding the work that I'm doing, I'm still more than a bit nervous about having time to finish everything up.

The making of my Cragen With A Thousand Faces project is being documented on an episode of Art 21, and I did an interview tonight that I feel really good about. Can't wait to see it finished.

Because I've been buying and reading so many theory books in the past couple of months, I made myself start reading fiction before bed, just to give my brain a little reward. I ended up finding a copy of The Sound and the Fury for less than $1 on Amazon and tacked it onto another order so I could get free shipping. I envy Faulkner's ability to write utterly decadent yet effortless prose, and am thoroughly enjoying my brain's little fiction stay-cation.

Optimus Prime, my roommate's cat, has been helping me with my preparations for Open Studio Night this Friday. I officially have business cards, which makes me feel a little old, and tomorrow I'm going to make a trailer for my thesis video and set up my lair...I mean studio... did I say lair?...for the visitors. The event coincides with the Southern Graphics Council annual meeting which is being held at Moore, so hopefully some of the arts professionals attending the meeting will head upstairs for some guacamole, secret videos and business cards.

Clearly, the internet changes the game as far as the producer-advertiser-consumer relationship is concerned, as no longer is the distribution of content restricted to those big media conglomerates but opened up to anyone with access to a computer and nominal technical savvy. Clearly, we have become a new type of consumer since we share access to the means of content production and distribution and can therefore reinvent what is produced by big media to serve our need for expression. As this new market system continues to develop, it will be interesting to see how the pre-existing media megaliths like big television networks adapt (or don't adapt) while new players (google, etc.) start to wrestle for megalithic status.

I'm still developing my thoughts about this, but in the meantime, here are some articles and things.

Cragen With A Thousand Faces

The following is an excerpt from a rough draft of one of my two thesis papers:

Like all contemporary myth-makers, I looked to the established tropes of the narrative tradition to identify those symbols and strategies that are universally agreed upon as signifiers of specific meanings. I then manipulated those tropes to reveal a system of meaning transmission that is decidedly out of line with the historically understood strategies of the narrative tradition, but, by the nature of its creation, cannot possibly divorce itself from that tradition. For example, the story of Captain Cragen, a frequently occurring character in my personal myth (originally taken from the popular television series, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit), may mostly align with Campbell's hero's journey, but in my myth, Cragen can be at any given time any, every and no character in the myth.

Ugly Cassanova Coffee Chip Cookies

At first, they seem a little bitter, but they've got plenty of sugar and chocolate chips to keep you just happy enough. Also, they'll keep you awake for days.

To make these tasty treats, follow the same basic cookie recipe from the Cinnamon Brown Sugar Cookie recipe, but add half a cup of chocolate chips, and some instant coffee powder. I used two tablespoons to make them extra potent, but you can add as little as you want if you're less bitter and antisocial than I am.

Midnight Baking

So, lately I've taken to making cookies at odd hours of the night with my roommate's dog. I started off with the standard chocolate chip, but since I ran out of chocolate chips, I was forced to get more creative with my flavors. This time, I'm making cinnamon and brown sugar cookies in honor of this winter weather.

Tonight's recipe is based on the "Smart Cookie" recipe in Cheap & Easy: A Cookbook for Girls on the Go by Sandra Bark and Alexis Kanfer (which I highly recommend!), but as usual, I've made some adjustments.

The recipe calls for:
1/2 stick of butter
3/4 cup sugar
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
1/2 cup all-purpose flour <----- I pretty much always triple the amount of flour. I just add enough to make the consistency more doughey and less like batter.
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt

** I added 2 teaspoons of cinnamon to the dough.**

With the oven at 350, I tried desperately to reasonably portion the dough so that we won't end up with just one huge cookie on a lightly greased baking sheet. After that, I brushed some melted butter over the dough and sprinkled brown sugar on the top. You can afford to be generous with the brown sugar.

After giving away dozens of oil paintings to people from craigslist last night, I saw this post on the artblog about an upcoming panel concerning how much public money should be spent on the arts.

Lately, I've been curious about the function and value of art in contemporary society, so perhaps I should go to the panel and let some experts answer all of my questions.

A Perspective on Wilhelm Reich

Oddly enough, through the latter part of my upbringing, I became quite familiar with Wilhelm Reich and his ideas about orgones. It's always fun to meet other people who "know about orgones" and compare notes.

So, naturally while I was enjoying some Chianti and Easy Mac, looking for a full text online verson of Debord's "The Society of Spectacle" and came across this article, I thought I ought to pass it along.

New York! At Last!

I haven't been to New York since the Cretaceous Period, so I finally nailed down a date. I'll be going up on the first Saturday of March and don't want to waste the twelve bucks I spent on bus tickets, so I'm planning ahead.

Raspberry Shortcakes for Valentine's Day

It's that time of year, kids.

This year, my task is to make a fabulous dessert to pair with a Mediterranean seafood dinner, so I wanted to keep it light and fresh.

Really, there are three parts to this dish. The shortcake base, the fruit glaze and the delicious toppings. Since I'm about as domestic as Hyundai Sonata, I went to the internet for recipes.

For the base, I mainly used this recipe, but made some adjustments. Instead of shortening, I just used the equivalent amount of butter. I ended up doubling the amount of butter and half and half to compensate for what I thought to be an unreasonable amount of flour. I also added a dash of vanilla extract to compliment the raspberry flavors that will be added later.
**My batch came out a little dense, but it's all for the best since it supports a lot of fruit and cream.**

The glaze was the fun part. I used the first part of this recipe. Since I wanted this dessert to be as fresh as possible, I left large chunks of fruit in the glaze and did not run it through the blender. I also left a lot of the liquid in because the shortcake will absorb the juices later and it will be magnificent. (I've been 'testing' the glaze all morning....)
**Since the base isn't particularly sweet, and the fresh raspberry topping will be relatively tart, you can afford to use a lot of sugar in the glaze.**

The delicious toppings will be as simple as possible. I thought about adding some fresh mint leaves, but decided it best to stick with fresh raspberries (if there are any left after I'm done 'testing' them, too) and good ol' whipped cream. The whipped cream is the only part of the recipe I didn't make myself, so I guess it'll be the only edible part of the dessert.

** Best served when the glaze is hot and the raspberries are chilled.**

Last night was the first official meeting of The Great and Terrible Artists' Collective! We, of course, ironed out some technical bits and each of us has some serious homework to do to prepare for the opening of our gallery slated for May 2010, but we couldn't resist having a little fun promoting ourselves, so we made a facebook page.

The following is from Margot Lovejoy's Postmodern Currents: Art and Artists in the Age of Electronic Media (1989)

"Refusal [to outright embrace of "the new" as a positive act of renewal] takes several forms. For some artists, it takes the form of a conservative, obstinate refusal of modernity involving loyalty to the traditional practice of art and the patient pleasures of hand gesture and experiment through slow manipulation using time-honored practices. For others, it takes the form of a refusal of the present by turning inward to a private metaphorical world apart from time itself. For yet others, the refusal may be aggressive or derisive -- a political refusal or denunciation of technological civilization in which man is seen as a powerless endangered species in a system where technology is owned and manipulated by those in power to control and direct the culture and society as a whole.

....

If artists can liberate tefchnology from those who own and manipulate its use for goals of power or profit, technology can be used constructively as an enlightening influence to gain new insight, to seek new meaning, to open higher levels of communication and perception. For example, commercial television commonly portrays as the truth sensationalist news stories and documentaries to a mass audience which is increasingly passive and addicted to it as their major form of access to the outside world. The Wizard of Oz is the ultimate metaphor for the manipulation of consciousness by television. Finally unmasked as a fragile mortal playing God behind a screen of lights and a thunder of noise, the Wizard of Oz characterizes the power of the media to confuse truth and fiction. We often mistake highly edited presentations of an event as factual truth. "Our absorption and belief in media's second-hand information can distract us from home truths that we sorely need to deal with, or -- to use the metaphor of Oz once again -- [it distracts us] from getting back to the reality of Kansas." (Barry Blinderman, "Ed Paschke," p. 131.) As artist Ed Paschke has remarked: "I don't really think we realize how ingrained in us that way of seeing that format really is. For you folks from Coal Region, PA, the story of Centralia is old news, but for the rest of you that didn't get to go there every time you couldn't think of a new idea for your high school photo class, I figured I'd put together this little post.

I won't include the whole history of the town, since you can just read about it on Wikipedia, but here are the basics. Centralia, PA used to be a normal* little coal patch town (*as normal, of course, as any PA coal town can be...) when the huge vein of anthracite coal beneath it was ignited. Unable to extinguish the blaze, the government deemed the town unlivable and ordered its evacuation - because APPARENTLY when the ground beneath your home cracks open and starts to spew carbon monoxide fumes into it, it's not very healthy. Or, you know, the government just wanted to steal the citizens' mineral rights. Tough call.

Today, there are only a few stubborn folks living in the town while the rest of the buildings have been mostly demolished. Centralia is visited frequently by curious folks with cameras, so Will and I decided to take a drive out to the steaming ghost town and take some photos of our own.

Above is a shot of steam rising from a chasm in what was once Route 61 created by the heat of the fire burning below the ground. A section of the highway was destroyed by the fire, so traffic is rerouted around the damaged section, but you can still walk around old 61.

There's Will walking in the northbound lane of old 61. The twigs toward the center of the image are growing from what was once the highway's median.

In the town itself, my trusty car, The Blue Bomber hangs out on what used to be a public road running through a neighborhood of row houses.
Something, perhaps, is missing from this photo.

At the end of Wood Street, you can see the entire hillside venting steam from the fire.

So, there you have it, my photos of the mine fire. Go visit Centralia and get some of your own since every high school student in the coal region already does.

The Proposed Hirshhorn 'Bubble'

While museum expansion is currently a hot-button issue, especially in Philadelphia where the famed PMA continues to mount its immense expansion plans in the face of unfavorable economic circumstances, this New York Times article tells of a museum that might have found another solution. The Hirshhorn has always been one of my favorite art museums, (second only to the Pompidou Center) so this idea caught my attention.

The article explains that the huge inflatable meeting space will, among serving many other purposes, make the architecture of the Hirshhorn less, well, ugly. Personally, I disagree that the original architecture is so undesirable and find that the drawing of the 'bubble' makes the place look kind of like one of those 'pooping pig' toys crossed with a can of facial lotion.

Beyond aesthetics, however, the director of the project, Richard Koshalek hopes that the new meeting place will facilitate a change in the nature of the discussion of contemporary culture -- a move from aristocratic self-indulgence to a real, meaningful discussion in which the public are not only welcome but necessary. The article says, "The project could become something Washington has never had: a real democratic forum for the debate of cultural issues as varied as, say, Hollywood morals and the impact of fundamentalism on the arts. It could also, of course, become a political punching bag."

I'm skeptical that a bi-annual meeting in Washington, inflatable bubble or no bubble, will bring any significant numbers of new voices into the discussion. My initial instinct is that it will just be another party spot for the same old crew that dominates every other discussion of culture.

At any rate, it's too soon to say how this will work out, but I hope the lotion bubble will serve all of Koshalek's idealistic dreams.

As you'll see, I've divided the events into categories by topic rather than by chronology. Also, fair warning, the list may have gotten a tad long.

Courtney Mendenhall, Lisa Murphy, Bailey Goldenbaum, Rachael Ocelus and I conceived of and founded The Great and Terrible Artist's Collective.
Angel O's senior thesis exhibition got written up in the artblog!
Angel O, Masha Badinter and Sarah Wray showed their post-thesis work at the Life Lines show at Midwives Gallery.
Ashley Flynn's solo show at Knapp Gallery earned rave reviews.
Ryan Trecartin got the last laugh -- and the $150,000 Wolgin Prize.
Kelly Kozma's work was shown at Pterodactyl's "Creepy" show in October.
I mounted my first off-campus show, "Shooting Lessons" at Angel Studios in Kensington.
Lisa Murphy, Breana Copeland and I (among others) exhibited our work in the galleries at City Hall for the Fairmount Park Historic Houses exhibition. (We also won prizes and got written up in the Inquirer.)
Lisa Haskel, Andie Olson, Alison Gulcyzinski, Kelly Kozma and I mounted the "5 Artists: 1 Bar" show at Top Hat in Old City.
Barclay Hendricks "Birth of the Cool" came to PaFA's galleries.
Denise Coolbaugh won Best of Show at "The Whole 9 Yards", a joint show put on by the Midwives Collective and Dirty Frank's bar.
Jamie Moore, Emma Pouncey, Amanda Moore, Rosie Raisen, Chloe Muxart and I constructed a public exhibition of installation and video art as a collaboration with the Wilma Theatre based on their production of Scorched. We were later nominated for a Barrymore Award for New Approaches to Collaborations.
Emma Pouncey, Becca Jennings, Claire Buchanan and I all won travel fellowships as part of the junior fellowship competition at Moore. The fellowships allowed Emma to travel to London and Venice, Becca to Tallahassee, Claire to the American South, and me to Paris.
Emma Pouncey, Becca Jennings, Janelle Adamska, Diedra Krieger, Martha Gelarden, Sarah Hunt and others created performance photographs for the one night only photo show, "Acting: 201" at the Midwives Gallery.
Plastic Fantastic, masterminded by Diedra Krieger puts on "Filthy", an exhibition about water at Studio 34 in West Philly.
Banksy hit the Bristol Museum.
The Art Blahg was started as a critical response to issues in the Philadelphia art scene and created a reasonable, if short-lived hubbub.

Affairs of the Public

Philadelphia nearly lost all of its libraries due to the threat of losing state funding.
SEPTA workers went on strike for a week causing inner city commuters considerable inconvenience.
The Phillies failed to win a second consecutive World Series after a real honest effort.
Barack Obama was sworn in as President of the United States of America and, among other things, began his attempts to improve America's healthcare system through drastic overhaul.
Bill O'Reilly got really upset about an episode of Law & Order: SVU.

My Always Tumultuous Personal Life

My sister, Maggie and I traveled to Paris (with a short stopover in Dublin). We watched a lot of films, stayed in a well-recommended hostel that booked us out of our room and overcharged for everything, then moved to a virtually unknown budget hotel at which Maggie sweet-talked the concierge into giving us the staff access password for the wifi.
As a consolation prize for being dumped by my then boyfriend of a year, my mom bought me a new fish.
Epsilon Chai Tea hosted a few more knockout parties, and then disbanded into its separate satellite campuses.
Sandy Frank, Dennis and I began our lives as residents of Gringotts and hosted The Communist Party.
"I love you more than I hate myself," "You're a piece of shit and I never want to see you again" and "You're the John to my Paul and I wish you were here" a boy I didn't want to date said to me.
Maggie started and finished her first semester of college at Tulane University.
Maggie also bought a guitar.
Under coercion, I recorded an album of my personal songs that I didn't want anyone else to hear.
Sandy Frank Program Sales Formerly Known As The Sandy Frank And Gladys Experience Formerly Known As The Trusty Haybales recruited two honorary members, Dennis and Adam, and changed their name to The Meager Feast Formerly Known As Sandy Frank Program Sales Formerly Known As The Sandy Frank And Gladys Experience Formerly Known As The Trusty Haybales. We also performed at Moore's Open Mic Night.
In a moment of particular frustration the week before classes started for the fall, Sandy Frank and I got new tattooes: The Deathly Hallows symbol for SF and a cockroach for me.
I starved for a few weeks because the bank took all of my money. (short version.)
William and I met and had many dinners, coffees, teas, movies and laughs.
I spoke at the Visionary Woman Awards Gala at Moore.
The Kabuki Superspeed was stolen.

Acting 201 at The Midwives

This Friday, be sure to stop by The Midwives Gallery in South Philly for the one night only photo show, Acting 201. Following a few years after the success of Acting 101, the folks at the Midwives Collective decided to bring back the open-submission show in which participants are given a random prompt and asked to assume the roles of actor, director and photographer to create a reality for that prompt. This year, over 50 artists are participating including myself, Diedra Kreiger, Martha Gelarden, Becca Jennings and Emma Pouncey.

My prompt was "The sound of bagpipes makes me so emotional." I had a good time performing this, and an even better time in post-production, so hopefully the rest of you will be as amused as I am with the result. You'll have to stop by the show (or wait until I post it on here after the show comes down) to see the photo.

What a perfect week to kick off the latest, greatest feature of One Night Only - Video Wednesday!

Tonight, the ICA is hosting their Open Video Call event. With submissions ranging from ultra-pro artsy stuff to amateurs filming each other walking dogs or something, this annual event is sure to ... uh, well... not sure to please, per se, but sure not to bore. (That was a terrible phrase....)

In the past, the selection process for this event was first-come-first-served, so whoever were the first, say, 20 people in line (or something like that) got their videos shown at the ICA. This year, the process is a bit different. Submissions were accepted up until last week and juried by New York artist, Michael Bell-Smith. Accepted submissions will be screened tonight.

Anyway, on to Video Wednesday. Life is short, so every Wednesday, or at least, during weeks when I feel like blogging, I plan to dose you up with videos I feel that you need to see before you die. To start, here's a video my friend Breanna Copeland created:

Holy projected video installation, Batman! Plastic Fantastic's at the ICA!

You don't want to miss the kick off event for this year's POST (Philadelphia Open Studio Tours). Live performance, cake, and various other celebratory trappings are to be expected for the opening of what will be the tenth annual POST event, but you should especially check out Plastic Fantastic (the installation and video work of Philadelphia artist, Diedra Kreiger) for a guaranteed good time.

Kreiger will also be participating in the open studio tours, so you can stop by Copy Gallery (in the Vox building) on the 3rd and 4th to see her work. She asks that visitors attend at least 2 open studios before coming to Plastic Fantastic, and plan to attend at least one more afterward.

I'd give you a description of what to expect, but then I'd just be ruining the surprise.

Sorry for the hiatus. Actually, I'm not that sorry. It's not that big a deal.

October is going to be a very busy month.

As far as the shameless self-promotion bit is concerned, Sandy Frank Program Sales Formerly Known As The Sandy Frank and Gladys Experience Formerly Known As The Trusty Haybails, the musical group that Sandy Frank and I started in 2005, will be performing at our housewarming party on October 3rd. So, come on out. The theme is "The Communist Party", so interpret that as you will.

Also, as my first show comes down this weekend at Angel Studios, I'll be participating in a number of small shows throughout October, so here are the dates so you can be sure to attend EVERY SINGLE EVENT:

October 2nd - Top Hat (Old City) - Small works in the $25 budget arena
October 9th - Midwives Gallery (South Philly) - Acting 201, a one night only photography show
October 19th - City Hall (uh... Center City?) - Fairmount Park's Colonial Elite; reception 5-7pm on the 5th floor.

Oh, and look for me on the red carpet at the Barrymore Awards on October 6th along with my colleagues from the collaborative project for Scorched at Wilma. Maybe we'll even win something! (We've been nominated for "The Ted and Stevie Wolf Award for New Approaches to Collaborations.")

I will be speaking at the annual Visionary Woman Awards Gala at Moore on October 7th, so I'll let you know how that goes.

On the 13th, I'll be participating in a public panel in conjunction with a film screening as part of The Galleries at Moore's Art for Lunch series, so don't miss your chance to see me humiliate myself not only in front of my peers, but my advising professors as well.
